Hi Everyone,

Here is the inaugural challenge, titled 'Great Depth with Layers of Haze'. Following is the task:

The Task : Create a vast scene that utilize the subtle textures of light and dark. Can be ancient ruins or futuristic city; the challenge is to create a grand vista with muted tones and layers of atmosphere.

The Rules:

1. Each contestant must create a Work In Progress (WIP) Thread/Topic in this forum, in order to participate in the contest.
2. The Subject of the WIP Thread/Topic must be like this : Great Depth with Layers of Haze - (your name); for example, if your name is Pony Horton then, you must write, Great Depth with Layers of Haze - Pony Horton.
3. The width of the WIP Matte-Painting images must be 550 pixels.

Final Entry Thread : A Final Entry Thread will be posted on October 15th, 2011 wherein the contestants will be required to post their final Digital Matte-Painting entries in 1300 px X 700 px (minimum) resolution.

Deadline : October 24th, 2011 (11:59 PM - Pacific Standard Time).

So, get ready with your pen-tablets and start to flesh-out your ideas and concepts for the challenges; will be eagerly waiting to see all your entries!!!

What is the guidelines for content? Anything that has to be in there in terms of architecture or specific organics? Or is the only criteria the layers of haze?

Hi ChippedTooth, Thanks for your questions. The use of architecture or specific organics is your choice. The main theme of the contest is great depth utilizing layers of haze. Architecture would certainly help define the scope of the depth, but is not required. A successful matte painting instantly informs the viewer of the scope of the landscape, seascape, galaxies, etc. The need to look far away is the underlying poetry of the contest. Have fun and be creative!

Hi Jamie, Moving elements would be a great way to describe depth but this contest will be judged on a single still image submission. Thanks!
